Meghan Hetfield

Meghan Hetfield is a Peer Support Specialist, a Recovery Coach and a Peer Advocate who is committed to changing the narrative of addiction, recovery, substance use and mental health. She is committed to meeting folks “where they’re at” in their unique and personal relationships to substance use and mental health. She believes that radical compassion and support without shame and punishment are the foundations for healing individuals and communities navigating the drug poisoning crisis.

As a trainer, facilitator and public speaker she continues to partner with communities, agencies and organizations to amplify the history and principles of Harm Reduction, Peer Support and solutions to the drug poisoning crisis in America. As an organizer for Harm Reduction Works-HRW, Meghan hosts and develops scripted mutual aid support groups for folks interested in Harm Reduction for any reason, including family and loved ones of people who are currently using substances. This meeting is the first of its kind and has spread throughout the country to in-person and digital support meetings occurring almost every day of the week.

Through this work, Meghan has come to believe that art and media are a vital mechanism for the paradigm shift that is needed to put an end to the harms of mass incarceration and an overdose crisis born out of the war on drugs and a failed addiction treatment system. The War on Drugs has failed, Meghan believes we can build a world where people aren’t criminalized for having a mental health issue and/or wanting to experience joy, euphoria or pain relief.

Meghan is a licensed Medicinal/Edible Mushroom Forager and loves to connect people with wild spaces and the healing that can be found there through guided Foraging walks and Peer-led groups. She spends most of her free time exploring the Catskill Mountains foraging for edible/medicinal herbs and fungi, and spreading the message of radical compassion through Harm Reduction.
